Hi loves!!
I HAVE OFFICIALLY TURNED 20!! It’s kind of a bittersweet feeling to be quite honest, I’m no longer a teenager but I don’t even feel like an adult however I technically am one. In ‘celebration’ of my birthday, I’ve decided to do one of those generic posts talking about things I’ve learnt in my lifetime. So I hope you enjoy reading this and hopefully my musings and realisations are words of wisdom to you.
1. You will NOT be friends with 90% of the people you went to secondary school with.
It’s just the way life works, even the friends you consider to be close will probably drift away. Most friendships/relationships mean nothing outside of school and once you part ways, you slowly lose contact and apart from following each other on social media (to stalk), you won’t talk.
2. Continuing from my previous point, people go one of three ways;
You either don’t talk to them ever again, or you only talk to say happy birthday and wish them congratulations when they pass their driving test or get married or you have those rare gems that are special who stay in your life and you should hold on to them.
3. Good friends are hard to come by so you should hold on to them.
ALSO, don’t assume a friendship is over just because you haven’t spoken in a long time, with good friends, you could meet after months and it’ll be like normal.
4. Everyone has their own life, do yourself a favour and don’t compare yourself to others.
I know people that are getting jobs and getting married and travelling but just because I’m not doing any of those things even though I’m the same age as these people doesn’t mean I’m not doing anything with my life.
5. Constantly remind yourself that you could be in a worse position than what you’re in.
ALWAYS be grateful. Yes, yes this is one of the generic things that everyone says but it’s so true! We get so caught up in worldly affairs that we forget to appreciate the wonderful things and people around us.
6. What goes around, comes around.
This is true, 100%, what you put into the world is what you get out of it. There’s so many ways to say this but it can be summed up in one word – KARMA. You can’t be a horrible person and expect good things to happen to you, the world has a way of catching up to you and whether you’re spiritual or not, I think karma is one thing you should believe in. You reap what you sow – that’s one of my favourite quotes!
7. Hard work pays off!
Never ever be one of those people who get upset when they’ve failed an exam or not done as well as they thought they would because I guarantee you those are the ones who didn’t put in the effort in the first place. Remember, how sweet the tea is depends on how much sugar you put in it, meaning you’ll be rewarded if you put in the effort.
8. It ALWAYS gets better.
This is the truth, there’s no denying. Obviously when you’re in a difficult situation, you think everything is going wrong and there’s no coming out of it but I promise you, it will get better and you’ll look back at the situation you were in and think ‘why was I so worried?’ Everything happens for a reason and that difficult situation will always open another door for you, a door that you might not even have expected.
9. Everyone backbites, including me and you!
We all do it, intentionally or not. It’s just the way the world works and sometimes it can hurt. You might not even realise you’re doing it but we’re all guilty of it and we’re all a victim of it as well.
10. Don’t prejudge a situation.
Most of the time when you overthink a situation and you think people are going to judge you or act a certain way or you think you’re going to feel uncomfortable, it’s most likely that it’s not going to pan out that way!!
11. NEVER judge anyone.
You have no idea what they’re going through or what they’ve been through. This is another genetic one but it’s so important! Sometimes the people that seem the coldest are often the ones that have the warmest hearts.
12. Do everything to the best of your ability.
You don’t want to regret anything down the line, for example, you do not want to regret not trying hard enough for your exams. Everything feels better if you know that you’ve tried your best.
13. Always listen to your elders.
They know what they’re talking about, they’ve lived and experienced life and seen it all. Even if you think you know best, doesn’t mean you actually do. Yes, it might annoying to listen to the cold hard truth sometimes but just grin and bear it because one day, you’ll look back and realise they were speaking sense.
14. IT’S AMAZING AND DOWNRIGHT EMBARRASSING HOW MANY ADULTS MISSPELL YOUR AND YOU’RE.
15. Education is the key to life.
Never stop educating yourself and others around you. It’s amazing learning new things everyday and those types of people that call books ‘boring’ and mess around during school really need to reassess their life!
16. Don’t ever feel shy or intimidated in public situations.
Okay, I’ll admit I’m always shy and awkward when it comes to talking to new people or just generally talking to people in public situations but I’ve learnt that you probably won’t see that person again so who cares about holding back or not acting like yourself? Also think about it, when we’re in an awkward situation, we’re too worried about ourselves to think about the other person and that’s exactly what they’re doing too – worrying about themselves, not you!
17. Live in the moment.
We all do it, we think long term and focus on what’s ahead. When we’re in school, we think about uni, when we’re in uni, we think about getting a job etc etc. Sometimes, it’s best just to put all those thoughts and worries to the back of your head and just take everything happening around you in your stride and enjoy it!
18. Always stand up for what you believe in.
Don’t conform to what society thinks is normal. You like something and you’re passionate about it? GREAT! Don’t ever let anyone make you feel weird for something you believe in or something that you like. YOU DO YOU (unless it’s illegal, of course).
19. LET THE TOXIC PEOPLE GO!
Easier said then done but people who only bring you down and the ones that don’t want to see you prosper and be happy – THEY 👏🏼 NEED 👏🏼 TO 👏🏼 GO 👏🏼 !! Do yourself a favour and get rid of them, they’re irrelevant and you’ll feel so much better when you do. A small circle of trustworthy, genuine group of friends is so much better than loads of fake ones anyway.
20. DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND ALWAYS BE YOURSELF!
My main one but also my most generic one. It’s amazing how long it took me to realise that I should never care what people think, it’s true that it’s hard to please everyone so don’t worry about it. Stand up for yourself, don’t let anyone come in the way of what makes you happy.

Happy birthday! Couldn’t agree more with #19… I let go of a very toxic person in my life last year and my life has been so much lighter and happier without them! Enjoy your twenties! They’re a blast. 😊

Happy Birthday! Those are all pretty good points … some of 100%. The “view” is somewhat different from my end of the telescope ~ follow your dreams, remember: “who dares wins!” You will never take the lead by just following the crowd.

Happy birthday! This is a great list of wisdom. What you may not realize, 20 is so young and there is never an age to look at with intrepidation. Consider how many people don’t reach (fill in the blank) years old and then consider yourself the lucky one.

Toxic people so need to go! Seriously!
I have very few close friends, but one of them i haven’t seen for 2.5 years. And yet, i know when we meet again, we’ll just pick it up where we left off 🙂 (of course we do talk online every now and then, so that does help)

Well done you. These are wise words indeed of someone your age. Would that I had had the same wisdom aged 20. Now almost 62, I’m probably just about there but I’m sure I would have had an easier time of the last 60 odd years if I had been somewhat more reflective at an earlier age.
